An operating system (OS) is system software that a device runs on. It is created in order to use the hardware installed on the device it runs. All other applications use the installed operating system to run; without it, they could not run either.

Google has created a few operating systems, including Android for mobile phones and tablets and Chrome OS for Chromebook computers. All computer hardware that exists requires an operating system. The operating system can be either graphical like Android and Microsoft Windows, or it can be text-based such as MS-DOS.
